The lighting problems homeowners call about

The room is dim

One ceiling fixture doing the work of six. Corners stay dark, and lamps get added to cover the gap.

You can't see the counter

Overhead light lands behind you while you work. Under-cabinet lighting fixes the shadow the ceiling can't reach.

The fixtures are dated

A remodel stalls at the light fixtures — or the new ones sit in boxes because the existing box or switching won't take them.

Outside is dark

No light at the door, the garage or the walkway, or fixtures that were never rated for where they were mounted.

What we install

Types of lighting projects

Most jobs are one of the following, or a combination of them during a renovation.

Interior lighting

Kitchens, living areas, bedrooms, hallways, basements and stairwells — ceiling fixtures, pendants, under-cabinet runs and the switching to control them.

Recessed lighting

Layouts planned for the room rather than spaced by guesswork, in new construction or retrofitted into finished ceilings.

Exterior lighting

Entry, garage, deck and walkway lighting using fixtures and boxes rated for outdoor locations.

Fixture replacement

Swapping out dated or failed fixtures, including heavier fixtures and ceiling fans that need the right box and support.

Lighting upgrades

LED retrofits, dimmer changes and switching upgrades so the light level and color suit how the room actually gets used.

Renovation & new build lighting

Lighting run as part of a remodel or a house being built — planned before the ceiling closes up and finished once the cabinets are set.

New construction wiring

The design half

Where the fixtures go matters as much as the wiring

Two rooms can have the same number of lights and feel completely different. Before anything gets cut into a ceiling, it's worth working through a few things.

Look and feel

  • Layout against the room. Fixture spacing planned around the cabinets, the island and the walls — not dropped onto a grid and hoped for.
  • Fixtures you actually chose. Pendants, ceiling fixtures and trims you picked, hung at a height that suits the room.
  • Light color. Warm or cool changes how a kitchen or a living room reads. Worth settling before the order goes in.
  • Layers. Ceiling light, counter light and accent light doing different jobs, rather than one fixture doing all three badly.

How it works day to day

  • Light where you work. Under-cabinet lighting puts light on the counter instead of on your back.
  • Switching that makes sense. Switches where your hand already goes, and rooms with two entrances controlled from both.
  • Dimming. Dimmers matched to what you're actually running, so nothing flickers or buzzes.
  • Stairs, halls and outside. The places where poor lighting is a safety problem before it's an aesthetic one.

FAQ

Lighting questions we get asked

Can you add recessed lighting to a ceiling that's already finished?

Usually, yes. Retrofit housings are made for finished ceilings, and most of the work is planning the layout and finding a practical path for the wiring. What's above the ceiling — attic space, a second floor, joist direction — decides how involved that part gets, so it's worth a look before anyone quotes it.

I bought my own light fixtures. Will you install them?

Yes. Homeowner-supplied fixtures are common. Keep the box, the mounting hardware and the instructions together, and let us know the fixture weight if it's going on a ceiling that needs a fan-rated or heavy-fixture box.

Can you put my lights on dimmers?

Often, yes, but the dimmer has to match the bulbs. Plenty of LED lamps flicker or buzz on older dimmers built for incandescent bulbs. We'll match the dimmer to what you're actually running.

How long does a lighting job take?

It depends on the scope and the access. Swapping a fixture is short work. A full room of recessed lights with new switching is a bigger job, and older homes with plaster or blocked joist bays take longer than open framing. You'll get a time estimate along with the price.

Do you do outdoor lighting too?

Yes — exterior fixtures, entry and garage lighting, and lighting on existing or new exterior circuits. Anything outside needs fixtures and boxes rated for the location, which is part of what gets specified up front.

Which towns do you cover for lighting work?

Middleborough, Plymouth County and surrounding communities in Eastern Massachusetts. The service area page has the fuller list.
